NEWSFLASH: ENTRY DEADLINE EXTENDED TO 16th MAY 2008!!!   SO KEEP GOING WRITING THOSE LYRICS!!!   NAME OUR CRUSHER AND BE IN TO WIN!!

The Glass Packaging Forum wants to encourage you all to recycle glass - at home, at school and when you are out and about.

There are good reasons to recycle glass and other packaging materials. It makes good sense for the environment, society and the economy. However as New Zealanders are now doing so well at recycling glass, we are collecting more than is needed to make new glass containers.

This is a particular problem for towns and communities in South Island or at a distance from Auckland because it costs more than the value of the glass to transport the recycled glass (known as cullet) back to the Auckland furnace to make new glass.

Whilst there are plenty of uses around New Zealand for this glass such as in the base course for roads; agricultural mulch; water filtration; concrete; sandblasting; erosion protection and even golf bunkers, first the glass needs to be crushed and many places simply don't have the equipment locally to do this and are stockpiling the glass until they find something to do with it.

So the Glass Packaging Forum has purchased a mobile glass crusher which will go on tour around the country to crush glass which can then be put to good use locally. This glass crusher needs to be named! and this is where the Class Rap competition comes in.

    CHE FU DAVID CARTER
    CHE FU
    MUSICIAN

Che Fu is one of New Zealand's most successful male vocalists, who began his music career at high school with a group of friends. They formed the Low Down Dirty Blues band, but would go on to change their name to the legendary Supergroove. Their debut album 'Traction' sold triple platinum and went on to win countless awards.

Che parted ways with Supergroove in 1996. One week later, a Number 1 hit with DLT and the single 'Chains'.

In 1997 Che released his debut solo album '2b S.Pacific' on BMG which was soon certified platinum. At the New Zealand Music Awards that year Che received awards for Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Most Promising Entertainer of the Year and the prestigious Male Vocalist of the Year.

Che then signed to Sony Music and began writing material for the album 'Navigator'. He also formed an eight piece live band called The Krates. Together Che and The Krates spent the summer performing new material at such events as Big Day Out, Pacifika, WOMAD not to mention countless shows up and down the north & south islands and the private premier event of Lord of the Rings.

Navigator was rewarded the following year with seven New Zealand Tui Awards and attained triple platinum status.

Che-Fu released an album of his greatest hits and new material on August 28, 2006.

'Hi-Score: The Best Of Che-Fu' features singles from Che's three solo albums - '2b S.Pacific', 'Navigator' and 'Beneath The Radar' - including 'Misty Frequencies', 'Fade Away', 'Scene III', 'Waka', 'Random', 'Lightwork' and more.

The album also featured four new tracks. The first serviced to media was 'Chains Reloaded' - a remix of his number1 hit single 'Chains' featuring P-Money and Savage. 'Chains Reloaded' impacted radio marking the 10 year anniversary of when the original 'Chains' debuted at Number 1 in 1996.

On release in 1996, 'Chains' went straight to Number 1 on the New Zealand Singles Charts, and stayed there for 5 consecutive weeks. 'Chains' reached platinum and was the landmark single that brought New Zealand Hip Hop to mass attention.

Che Fu was a founding member of legendary local band Supergroove. Responsible for a string of what have gone on to become classic Kiwi anthems, Supergroove generated a staggering six Top 10 hits throughout the 90's. Amongst them the gold singles 'Scorpio Girls' & 'Sitting Inside My Head', platinum-selling 'Can't Get Enough' & 'You Gotta Know', live standouts 'Next Time', 'You Freak Me' & 'Here Comes The Supergroove', and many more.

Che's debut solo album '2b S.Pacific' was released in 1997. It launched four Top 10 singles ('Chains', 'Scene III', 'Without A Doubt' and 'Waka'), charted at Number 1, and sold two Platinum - a landmark for a local urban record at the time.

In 2001, Che released the follow-up album 'Navigator'. 'Navigator' debuted at Number 1 and stayed there for three successive weeks, going on to generate close to four platinum in sales. It featured the singles 'Fade Away', 'Random', and the APRA Silver Scroll winning 'Misty Frequencies'.

In 2005 'Beneath The Radar' was released and included the singles 'Lightwork' and 'Mysterious Vibe'.

    DAVID CARTER
GROUP ENVIRONMENT & TECHNICAL PROJECTS DIRECTOR
    LION NATHAN
    and
    CHAIRMAN
    GLASS PACKAGING FORUM

Currently based in Sydney, responsible for Lion Nathan's Australasian Environmental Strategy and Sustainability.

Chairman of the New Zealand Glass Forum and Vice President of the Packaging Council of New Zealand.

    Previous experience:

8 Years as Managing Director of Lion Nathan's China business - based in Shanghai.

5 Years Operations Director of Pepsi Cola Australia

David was born in the North of England…….. a long time ago - he's a "baby boomer". He grew up with rock groups such as the Beatles, Hollies, Kinks, and the Rolling Stones. These were all new groups way back then, and all were playing a new sound of music.

At school David learnt to read music and chose the Cornet as an instrument. He played in both the school and Salvation Army bands.

He grew his hair long (hippie-like) and learnt to play rhythm guitar in a group that played at school dances and small clubs. The group wanted to be (but never was) successful.

David's claim to fame was that he emigrated to Australia and went to school with the Bee Gees (the Gib brothers). That's when he decided to become an electrical engineer, leaving music to the talented guys like Che Fu.
